In this paper I will argue that French colonialism and American imperialism contributed much to the lack of democracy in Vietnam by destroying almost all venues for its development as well as by creating, directly and indirectly, the types of authoritarian institutions and structures whose impact will take many more years to change. Since this whole period in Vietnamese history covers over one hundred years, in what follows I will obviously be able to focus only on some features that I think are key or representative.
